The Story of a Courageous Woman, Book 5 of 5
Lady Nephele’s Devilry is the story of Elizabeth of Bosnia, krstjani princess who at age 11 was taken, against her will, to become the next queen of Hungary, second wife of King Louis the Great. Despite incredible challenges, she never gave up her struggle to find self-agency in a political and religious culture that denied that agency to women.
Dr. Gregov has brought this young woman’s story to life. The five volumes of the book embed the meager known history of Elizabeth into the larger historical context of 1300s Eastern Europe and the Balkans to create a rich portrait of life in that turbulent century, a portrait that enlarges the historical narrative about Elizabeth’s life and proposes an answer to the many questions raised by recorded history. Fortunately for us, it also allows the reader to vividly imagine life in those medieval times.
Book V – Revelations reveals to us the turbulent and terrifying outcomes of the battles for the Hungarian and Polish thrones. Queen Jelisaveta tries valiantly to save those thrones for her daughters, but she faces fierce opposition from the noble houses of Hungary and Poland and the European monarchs and princes who have been avidly watching the political situation in Hungary, ready to seize the country by military force if necessary. She learns that her life and the life of her daughter King Maria are in danger. They flee but are captured and imprisoned in the dungeon in Novi Grad, Croatia, where Queen Jelisaveta is killed. With the help of the Queen’s supporters, Lady Nephele escapes and vows to write the truth about what happened to Queen Jelisaveta. Book V also reveals the surprising answers to the family secrets and the identity of Queen Jelisaveta’s first child, now a grown man.
